Dear Reader,
If you have ever spent any time in a hotel, you know that they are usually places of relaxation, continental breakfasts, and tiny bars of soap. However, the Hotel Denouement is not a place of relaxation. It is a place where the Baudelaire orphans must work as concierges, hide behind potted plants, and deal with a cast of characters more crowded than a bargain bin at a shoe store.
I would like to tell you that this twelfth volume in the Baudelaire’s story contains a happy reunion, but the word "penultimate" here simply means "the second-to-last instance of misery before the final disaster." In this book, you will find:
A harpoon gun
A trial that is anything but fair
An organized library that hides disorganized secrets
And a fire that may finally burn away the last "safe place" the orphans have left.
I am bound by my oath to record these tragic events, but you are under no such obligation. It would be much better for you to check out of this hotel and find a book about a happy puppy or a very pleasant sandwich.
With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket
