Casein plastic was invented in 1897 by German chemists Adolph Spitteler and Wilhelm Krische. They treated milk protein, casein, with formaldehyde to create a durable, moldable, and colorful material, patenting their process in 1899. The material was initially developed as a white substitute for blackboards but was found to be more versatile and was used for products like buttons, jewelry, and fountain pens.
