Art Nouveau Maybe Older Antique Moriage Asian beautiful decorated Colorful vase. Unfortunately it is as it with the very bottom piece of one of the handles is chipped off however no other damage (besides natural age crazing) noted to this amazing and curious piece. I had quite a hard time finding information on origin and artist of this piece but this is what I have found. After giving it a few days to marinate in multiple Groups, I think I have a decent answer for you. The Japanese ID Group provided many helpful opinions and the take away for me was... it is definitively, Art Deco c. 1920's-1930's, with the majority sitting in the 20's. The FINISH of this vase is Moriage, which is a raised slip, with what is referred to as enamel beading for decoration and is very representative of Nippon Porcelain. So why do they deny that it is? I learned a great deal from this exercise. Moriage is the art of raised slip design, outlined by with raised slip border (the SOLID lines) and detailed or decorated with enamel beading (the DOTS), and the dots are not a requirement of Moriage, but the solid line detail IS. An expert artist is consistent and can execute a precision like application of their design and the lines and dots are consistent in size throughout. (Sorry, layman's terms and explanation). On your vase, you have very little "Moriage" and mostly "decoration" or beading AND not done by an expert, but rather a student of the art of Moriage. Which is a good sagway for me try and explain why it's so curious to experts.

There is a theory about this piece. not considering its finish, but stylistically, the shape of the Urn, inside beyond the rim, the handles and the foot or base all say it's much older than the Art Deco Period. Possibly 50+ years, or maybe even more. In theory a much older vase, maybe orphaned from a broken pair or a failing glaze, rather than using a blank intended only for a master artist, they have a student re-use and practice their Moriage technique on an old vase. Kind of reminds me of an Old World Master works found under a painting by one of their students.
