The story centers on Nick investigating the bizarre troubles of the ultra-wealthy Al "The Alpaca" owner of the Three Faces of Al department store, blending wordplay, non-sequiturs, and layered audio gags in a single narrative track. This album marked a significant moment in the group's history as their first major release following the temporary departure of founding member David Ossman in 1982, with only Phil Austin, Peter Bergman, and Phil Proctor contributing, yet it revitalized their output during a transitional period. Notably, it was one of the earliest spoken-word albums issued on compact disc, helping pioneer the format for comedy recordings in the mid-1980s.
