Cats Under the Stars, by Jerry Garcia, released in 1978, is the first album credited to the band, showcasing Jerry Garcia’s exploration of diverse musical styles like rock, funk, and reggae outside his Grateful Dead work. Recorded at Club Front in San Rafael, California, the album features original compositions primarily written by Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter, with contributions from band members like John Kahn and Donna Jean Godchaux. There was critical praise for Garcia’s soulful guitar work and the band’s tight performance. Historically, it’s notable as Garcia’s most personal studio project, reflecting his creative control and the freedom of his side band. No singles from the album became major hits, though Rubin and Cherise and the title track Cats Under the Stars gained some cult following among fans.
