The Car Over the Lake Album, by Ozark Mountain Daredevils, issued in September 1975 on A&M Records and marking the fulfillment of their initial three-album contract with the label. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, and produced by David Anderle, the album showcases the band's evolving sophistication in blending rock, country, and pop elements, though it lacked the star producer Glyn Johns from their prior effort. Its whimsical title and cover art derive from a surreal poster promoting one of the band's early college performances, encapsulating their playful, rootsy aesthetic. Historically, the LP arrived amid a peak in Southern rock's popularity but signaled a subtle shift away from pure country influences toward poppier arrangements, contributing to the genre's broader transition in the mid-1970s. The only notable hit single was If I Only Knew, penned by drummer Larry Lee and harpist Steve Cash, which peaked at No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1976.
