About The Record:

The Essential, by Pete Seeger, drawn from Folkways Records recordings between 1950 and 1974, showcases Pete Seeger’s influential folk music and activism, featuring 23 tracks that highlight his role in the American folk revival and social justice movements. Key songs include Where Have All the Flowers Gone?, a significant anti-war ballad that became a folk standard, and We Shall Not Be Moved, a civil rights anthem rooted in traditional gospel. The album also includes tracks like The Bells of Rhymney and Wimoweh (Mbube), which reflect Seeger’s knack for adapting global and traditional songs, though none were chart-topping singles in their original form by Seeger. Historically, the album captures Seeger’s enduring impact on folk music and his ability to weave protest and tradition, with a gatefold cover featuring a 1976 Pickin’ Magazine interview adding context to his legacy.
