La Traviata features Plácido Domingo as Alfredo Germont and Teresa Stratas as Violetta Valéry, recorded for Franco Zeffirelli’s acclaimed cinematic adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera. Conducted by James Levine with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, this Deutsche Grammophon release captures the lush, emotional depth of Verdi’s score, complementing the film’s lavish visuals and dramatic storytelling. Historically significant, the soundtrack showcases Stratas’ critically praised performance, earning her a Grammy nomination, and highlights Zeffirelli’s innovative approach to bringing opera to the screen. The album, tied to the 1982 film release, remains notable for its star-studded cast and its role in popularizing opera through cinema. While the soundtrack lacks conventional hit singles, arias like Libiamo ne’ lieti calici (the Brindisi) and Sempre libera are standout pieces, widely recognized and celebrated within the opera repertoire.
