3, by Pousette-Dart Band, released in 1978 on Capitol Records, marked a peak in the American soft rock group's commercial trajectory during the late 1970s, blending folk-rock harmonies with influences from Buffalo Springfield and a polished, Eagles-like sound. As the son of renowned Abstract Expressionist painter Richard Pousette-Dart, frontman Jon Pousette-Dart infused the project with a familial artistic legacy, while the band's evolving lineup—including steady collaborators John Troy and John Curtis—contributed to its cohesive, radio-friendly vibe recorded at New York's Hit Factory. Historically significant as one of only two PDB albums to chart on the Billboard 200 (alongside 1977's Amnesia), 3 peaked modestly but exemplified the era's shift toward accessible, harmony-driven rock that bridged folk roots and mainstream pop. AllMusic critic Joe Viglione praised it as the most satisfying of their four Capitol releases, awarding three stars and highlighting the extraordinary second side for its melodic depth and underappreciated potential.
