Smokin', by Smokey Robinson, released in 1972, marked a significant point in his career as he transitioned from his role with The Miracles to a solo artist, showcasing his versatility as a singer-songwriter. Recorded live at The Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Washington, D.C., it captures Robinson’s soulful voice and charismatic stage presence, blending R&B, soul, and pop with covers and original material. The album is historically notable for being one of Robinson’s first major solo projects after leaving The Miracles, reflecting his ability to carry his Motown legacy forward independently. While Smokin' did not produce major hit singles, it included popular live renditions of tracks like The Tracks of My Tears and Tears of a Clown, which were already established hits from his Miracles catalog. The album remains a testament to Robinson’s enduring influence in soul music and his dynamic live performances.
