Stanley-made Union No. 6 Corrugated Frankenplane

$45.00

Details

Number 6 fore plane, 18" long, with corrugated sole. This is probably a plane made by Stanley and sold by Union, from the 1920's or 1930s.

This is a plane I purchased from eBay as a Stanley 6C, before I knew much of anything about buying old planes. It came with a tapered Revonoc wood plane iron, a really rusty chip breaker, no knob, a knob screw from a transitional plane, a broken tote, and no cap iron.

It now has reproduction hardwood handles, with the tall knob and correct screw. The Sargent cap iron is obviously from a donor plane. The iron with the New Brighton logo is also a replacement, but the chip breaker is the one that came with it. It has a small depth adjustment nut and no frog adjustment screw. This plane does not have the front knob ring as part of the body casting.

Overall good condition with nice patina. The japanning is not great—I'd rate it at 60% or so. All fasteners and adjusters are free and none are stripped or loose. Iron does have some surface rust but is reasonably sharp; the chip breaker is quite pitted from rust but is functional. A pretty good user plane all in all.
