Details
Lusterware is a type of pottery glaze that produces an iridescent, metallic, or rainbow-like sheen, achieved by firing metallic oxides in a reduced (oxygen-starved) atmosphere. This technique has been used for centuries, with notable examples from ancient Mesopotamia, China, and later in Europe during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. The iridescent effect is created by a thin layer of metallic compounds that refract light, giving the pottery a shimmering appearance.
Brazil has a rich tradition of ceramics, and during the mid-20th century, many factories produced decorative items, including lusterware, for both domestic and international markets. These pieces often featured hand-painted designs, raised motifs, and vibrant glazes, reflecting popular artistic trends of the time. Vases like this one were commonly produced as decorative objects, intended to add a touch of color and elegance to home interiors.
